The Alexander Beller Award

The Alexander Beller Award, named in memory of our esteemed colleague to honor his unstinting commitment to psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic education, is presented to candidates or recent graduates (within five years) of the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research in recognition of a significant scholarly study in the general area of psychoanalytic theory. Original contributions, scholarly reviews that furnish an integration of theory in a specific area, and clinical papers with significant focus on theoretical issues are considered.

The John J. Weber Prize for Psychoanalytic Research

The Psychoanalytic Center offers a prize to candidates and graduates for an original research paper on a psychoanalytic topic. The John J. Weber Prize for Psychoanalytic Research is given periodically, but not more than once a year. The winner is selected by the members of the Research Committee.

Creedmoor Teacher of the Year Award

The Creedmoor Psychiatric Center-Columbia Department of Psychiatry/NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital residency education and training affiliation was established in 1982. A major component of this agreement is the Center's provision of teaching and psychotherapy supervision for Creedmoor residents. This award, in the form of a plaque established in 2010, is given by the Creedmoor Residency Graduating Class to the Center's faculty member who has contributed most to their education and training in psychodynamic theory and pracice. It is presented on behalf of the Creemoor residents at the Center's graduation Ceremony and Dinner in June.

The George S. Goldman Award

The annual George S. Goldman Award for Achievement in Clinical Psychoanalysis and/or Psychoanalytic Education is given in recognition of and encouragement to colleagues who bring a high level of skill to psychoanalytic practice and teaching. Candidates, graduates, and faculty members of the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research are eligible for this award. The annual George S. Goldman Award of $500 and a scroll was conceived and funded by an anonymous donor in recognition of Dr. Goldman’s contributions to the teaching and practice of psychoanalysis.

The Howard Klar Teacher of the Year Award

The Howard Klar Teacher of the Year Award is presented annually at graduation to the outstanding teacher of candidates at the Psychoanalytic Center. The winner is chosen by the candidates each year. No teacher can win the award more than once every ten years. The Director serves as adviser to the committee. The prize carries an honorarium, an award, and the recipient’s name inscribed on a plaque in the Center Library.

The Lionel Ovesey Award

The Lionel Ovesey Award, begun in 1997, is given jointly by the Center and the Association for Psychoanalytic Medicine to a candidate or recent graduate at the Psychoanalytic Center who was significantly involved in original research, made an important contribution to the psychoanalytic literature, or was the primary person responsible for developing an innovative teaching or treatment program that has psychodynamic theory of treatment as its primary component.

Public Communications Award

This award honors a faculty member or a candidate at the Columbia Psychoanalytic Center who has effectively communicated in print, in online media, or in other forums, the value and importance of psychoanalysis. The purpose of the award is to encourage members of the Columbia community to spread the word about Columbia and psychoanalysis so that other professionals and the general public can better appreciate what psychoanalysis offers as a therapy and as a theory of mind.

Robert S. Liebert Award and Memorial Lecture

The Robert S. Liebert Award, established jointly by the Columbia Psychoanalytic Center and the Association for Psychoanalytic Medicine, honors the outstanding contributions of the late Robert S. Liebert to psychoanalysis in relation to the social sciences and the humanities. A scroll will be presented periodically (though not more often than biannually) to an individual in recognition of outstanding scholarship in the field of applied psychoanalysis. The format of the award will vary, but in most instances, it will occur in the context of a Liebert Memorial Lecture.

Sandor Rado Lectureship

The Sándor Radó Lectureship was initiated in 1957, shortly before Dr. Radó’s retirement, to commemorate his seminar of 16 two-hour lectures on advanced psychoanalytic technique he gave to the senior class in 1956. The Sándor Radó Lecture is given each year in the Spring at the Academy of Medicine in New York City and is funded jointly by the APM and the Columbia University Psychoanalytic Center to honor the memory of Dr. Radó, the first Director of the Center. The lecture carries a $500 honorarium and expenses.

The John F. O’Connor Award

The John F. O’Connor Award is given to the candidate or faculty member who has contributed the most to teaching psychodynamic concepts to medical students. It was established to commemorate Dr. O’Connor’s dedication to teaching medical students at Presbyterian Hospital and to reward those who are assuring psychoanalysis a secure future by teaching and serving as role models to aspiring physicians. The Director has been charged to appoint a faculty committee to select the recipient of the annual John F. O’Connor Award, which will be presented at the New Candidates Party in September. The award carries an honorarium.
